Commercial Solar in Ireland FAQ

What are the main benefits of commercial solar PV for my business?

Beyond significant reductions in electricity costs, commercial solar offers budget certainty by insulating your business from volatile energy prices. It also greatly enhances your company's environmental credentials, a key factor for customers and stakeholders. Furthermore, it provides greater energy independence and operational resilience.

Is a commercial battery storage system worthwhile?

For most businesses, yes. A battery allows you to store surplus solar energy generated during the day for use during expensive peak tariff hours (a practice known as 'peak shaving'). This maximizes your self-consumption and return on investment. Batteries also provide critical backup power (EPS) for essential equipment during grid outages, protecting your business from costly downtime.

What are the ESB Networks connection application forms (NC6, NC7 etc.)?

These forms are required to connect any electricity generator in parallel with the grid. The form depends on the system size:

  • NC6 (Micro-generation): For the smallest systems, up to 6kVA single-phase or 11kVA three-phase. Common for small businesses and residential properties.
  • NC7 (Mini-generation): The standard for many small and medium-sized enterprises, covering systems up to 17kVA single-phase or 50kVA three-phase.
  • NC8 (Small Scale Generation - Inverter): For larger inverter-based systems (like solar) from 50kVA up to 200kVA.
  • NC5 / NC5A (Small/Large Scale Generation): For systems above 200kVA. This is a more complex, formal connection process involving detailed grid studies and potential network upgrades. Note an NC5 application is for known generator manufacturer details whilst NC5A is for unknown generator manufacturer details.
What is an Export Limiting Scheme (ELS)?

An Export Limiting Scheme, or ELS, is a control system that dynamically limits the amount of surplus electricity your solar PV system can export to the grid. It is sometimes required by ESB Networks if the local grid infrastructure cannot handle the full potential export of your system. Installing an ELS can often allow for a much larger solar array to be installed than would otherwise be permitted.

What is a G10 relay and why is it required?

A G10 relay is a mandatory grid protection device. Its primary job is to instantly and automatically disconnect your solar installation from the electricity grid in the event of a grid fault or power outage. This is a critical safety feature that prevents your system from energising a grid that line workers may believe is powered down, ensuring their safety during repairs. G10 relays are a mandatory requirement for small and large scale generation. Read our definitive guide to learn more about the G10 relay.

When is ESB Witness Testing required?

ESB Witness Testing is a mandatory commissioning step for all grid-tied small and large scale generation systems. An ESB Networks engineer will visit your site to "witness" a series of tests that prove your system's protection devices (like the G10 relay) are configured correctly and will operate safely. SMC Energy manages and attends the Witness Test to ensure a smooth and successful final sign-off for your project.

Do I need planning permission for commercial solar panels?

Recent changes in Irish regulations have significantly expanded planning permission exemptions for commercial solar. For most business premises, roof-mounted arrays have no limit, and ground-mounted arrays are exempt up to area of 75m². However, there are 43 designated solar safeguarding zones (SSZ) across Ireland which are areas near an airport, aerodrome or helipad in which there is a potential for glint or glare from solar panels to impact aviation. SSZ's are limited to 300m² for each rooftop within the curtilage of the development. SMC Energy can manage this assessment for you.

How much does commercial solar in Ireland cost?

As a general guideline, a fully installed commercial solar PV system in Ireland typically starts from around €1,000 per kWp (kilowatt peak). However, the final cost depends on several factors like system size and equipment choice.
