Residential Solar in Ireland FAQ

What are the benefits of installing solar panels?

Solar panels can potentially reduce your electricity bills by 50-70% through self-generated power. They also qualify for incentives like the Clean Export Guarantee in Ireland, where you earn for surplus energy exported to the grid.

How long do solar panels last?

Most solar panels last 25-30 years, with warranties guaranteeing 80-90% efficiency after 25 years.

Do solar panels require maintenance?

Although not strictly necessary, solar panels can benefit from periodic cleaning to ensure green algae and lichen do not build up and obstruct the sun's rays. In fact, solar panel manufacturers recommend regular cleaning and maintenance checks to ensure optimal performance.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days or in winter?

Yes, solar panels generate power even on cloudy days (though at 10-25% of peak output) with the same being applicable in winter, as they mainly rely on daylight, not direct sunlight.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

In Ireland, most roof-mounted residential solar installations exempt from planning permission. For ground mount systems, an area covering up to 25m² of panels is exempt. Contact SMC Energy for further details.

Should I purchase a battery with my solar system?

Yes, purchasing a battery can be beneficial and is highly recommended for domestic installations. It reduces electricity costs by storing surplus solar energy for use later. You can take advantage of lower off-peak night rate charging and then discharging the battery during peak hours. Batteries can also provide a source of backup power during grid outages if configured accordingly.

What is NC6 Micro-generation in Ireland?

NC6 Micro-generation is the standard ESB Networks application for connecting a solar PV system to a typical home in Ireland. This covers the vast majority of residential installations. At SMC Energy, we manage this entire application process for you, ensuring your new system is fully compliant and seamlessly connected to the grid.

What is NC7 Mini-generation in Ireland?

NC7 Mini-generation is the application for larger residential installations that exceed the standard limits. This is uncommon but may be necessary for very large properties or homes with exceptionally high electricity needs (e.g., multiple EVs, heat pumps). Our technical survey will determine the correct application, and if an NC7 is needed, we handle all the complex paperwork and liaison with ESB Networks on your behalf.
